ClimbSci Episode 6: Recovery, Part I

ClimbSci Episode 6 is out! In this episode, Tom and I begin discussing recovery and why it’s important for a climber. We go over some of the key concepts in recovery—essentially, the acute physiological changes that occur during exercise that must be resolved—to set the stage for our next episode (to be released June 29, 2018) in which we discuss what you can do to actively or passively improve recovery.

As a reminder, we want your questions about this month’s episode! We’d really like to begin every episode by answering one or two questions from the previous episode to try and tie everything together. If you have questions, post them below.

Another great podcast. I really like the lack of hyperbole and instead just solid information on what is known, and what is still not known. I did find the beginning portion of this episode, about glycogen etc. far too techy for my current level of understanding. Too many words and concepts that I’m barely familiar with made it hard to follow and listen too. The second half was much better.

Looking forward to the next one. I think a brief overview of what exactly is recovering would be useful, ie. a list of energy systems, tissue repair etc. and how long each takes. Is adrenal fatigue a factor?

    Thanks.

Thanks, Steve! We’ll try to outline the various systems that are recovering in the next episode. Also—and this might be a hard question to answer, I realize!—what parts in the beginning of the episode were you unclear about? It sounds like it could be a good topic to either dig into more on ClimbSci, or perhaps just write a good, in-depth article on!
